Line Count Definition

Line counting is calculated by converting the document to plain text then dividing the number of characters by 65.

What is a Character?

It is any typed letter, number, space, punctuation mark, apostrophe, quote, etc. Characters that you cannot really see (like spaces or carriage returns) are represented internally in the text document and are counted.

Carriage Returns

In a document there are soft returns and hard returns. A soft return is a new line that exists as the result of word-wrapping. These are "virtual" and only appear as a function of the word processor (they do not really exist) and thus they do not affect line count.

Hard returns are the result of the user pressing the enter key. Typically, the only hard returns are found between paragraphs and usually at that point there are two consecutive hard returns.

Hard returns count as two characters (text documents on PCs use two separate codes together to represent the hard return internally). So basically, the space between two paragraphs in a given document will count as four characters.

Graphics, Header and Footer

When the document is converted to plain text, all graphics are removed so they do not affect the line count. The header and footer are also removed so text in them is not counted.
